Dr Ambedkar Scholarship: Dr Ambedkar Scholarship for DNTs, named after the father of the Indian Constitution, is a centrally sponsored scholarship scheme of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. However, the scheme is implemented by the State Governments/Union Administrations/Universities/Colleges in the form of State Scholarships such as Dr Ambedkar Scholarship of Chandigarh/Haryana/Tripura. Under this scholarship scheme, the ratio of funds to scholarship amount between the centre and the state is 75:25. It caters to the Non-Notified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes (DNTs) who are not included in the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes. The main objective of Dr Ambedkar Scholarship is to provide financial assistance to the children belonging to DNT so that they can become socially, economically and educationally empowered.
DNT Category Means:-
The term ‘De-notified Tribes’ stands for all those communities which were once notified under the Criminal Tribes Acts, enforced by the British Raj between l87l and I947. These Acts were repealed by the Independent Indian Government in l952, and these communities were “De-Notified”.
Denotified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Communities (DNCs) are hard to reach, less visible, and therefore frequently left out. While most DNTs are spread across the Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBC) categories, some DNTs are not covered in any of the SC.
